{Mudroom Storage: Reveal!!}

Our mudroom storage unit is finished, y'all (minus the hooks)!  And I am so happy with the way it turned out!  It's everything I dreamed of and fulfills my wish list...read here

It's white and has corbels (love)!
And it has just a little stained wood (love even more)!
And it's ready for us to hang our junk, to be cluttered up with our life's stuff, and to be used by our family. It's ready for it all!

The bench is made from two Hemnes TV consoles from IKEA (about $150 each) and some pine boards, stained to make the wooden top.  Read here to get more details on how we put the bench together.

Then, the games began as we pieced together the upper storage unit.  It was kind of like solving a puzzle.  Starting with two 1x12 boards on each side (6 foot tall) and then a grid in the middle with 1x4's (different lengths).
Then, we built the shelves out of 1x12 boards (8 foot tall).  Using the grids as support for the lower shelf, and 1x2's for the second shelf.
Above the shelves, we used a 1x8 on it's side to add all the trim moulding.  We found a great product at Home Depot that is two sided crown moulding.  It was easy, easier than we had anticipated...for realz, we were stressing about one thing...the crown moulding!  We made one cut with the compound miter saw set 33.9 bevel and 31.6 miter for an outside, 90 degree cut, the we flipped the other side of crown around, and we had a perfect mitered corner for the crown at top.

We added corbels from the Home Depot (they were about $9 each)...because I love them!

See the mitered perfectness...
We trimmed it all out in lattice wood, and 1x3's (fronts of the boards) and 1x2's (fronts of shelf divisions).

We painted the whole thing (even the IKEA cabinets) with Sherwin Williams Extra White semi-gloss paint to match the existing trim in house (don't forget the FLOETROL).  It took about three coats of paint...but we think it was well worth the effort!  What do you think?

We still need to add hooks...but I am still looking for the perfect ones.  I have looked in several places...but the hunt continues!

Each top "cubbie" is made to fit two Branas baskets from IKEA...with the dimensions of 9x9x9.  I see a trip to Cincinnati in my future!
All in all...we did the calculations, and adding the cost of the cabinets, lumber, crown moulding, paint, corbels, and nails, it cost us about $600 do to the whole thing!  Considering that this was an upgrade offered by our builder at $1700, we saved about $1100.  I feel pretty darn good about that!

  17. Wow! You are one talented lady! Your mudroom looks great! Did you have to prime the IKEA consoles prior to painting them and did you use a brush or foam roller when painting? It looks AMAZING!!!

  18. I love it I love it I love it!! I have been wanting this in my laundry room since we moved in our new house, and this looks totally doable (for my FIL). Thank you SO much for sharing! We spent hours in IKEA trying to use one of their pieces for a windowseat/desk/bookshelf combo and nothing would work with our measurements. This is just lovely!! I'm going to follow...

  19. Amazing! I especially love what you did with the trim. I'd have never know this started with IKEA cabinets. It looks totally custom. If I click my heels together three times and say, "There's nothing like corbels, there's nothing like corbels, there's nothing like corbels" will you come build one for me? LOL!

  28. What a terrific job! I've been planning the same type of project and will combine your ideas with mine for sure - have you tried looking for hooks at Lee Valley? I think they have several that suit the style of your project and you can shop online with them if you're not near a store. http://www.leevalley.com/en/hardware/page.aspx?p=50426&cat=3,40914&ap=1

  33. Just found you through Pinterest (as have others)and I cant believe you have done this as I have just designed the same thing (but a smaller version) for my house!!!! Using the same Hemnes tv unit but using the hemnes top as well. BUT why is it $150 in the US and $300 in Australia and our $ are about on par at the moment!!!Why does Ikea need to charge so much more here! Sorry just having my daily winge about costs here! Glad I found your blog though!

  34. Turned out really nice. Great job! I found you through Ikea Hacker.

  35. Wow, that looks incredible! Congratulations and well done.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love the look. I would like that at my front hall. I am wondering how did you solve the weight issue. The TV bench only handle up to 90 lb, and no one in my house weight that little. thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You are a genius. I rarely like anything I find on blog these days…. I can do better…I'm nice I don't tell anyone that!!!! But I am telling you you knocked my sox off. I love this unit and the imagination that saw this in a simple Ikea dresser thingy…genius.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @ It's Raining Jelly Beans...thank you! Others...thank you. Weight issue...bolted them to the wall. We don't really stand on it, so we thought it would be okay. Everything on top is also nailed and screwed to the wall, so no real weight is on it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Similar question for the weight issue.. I'm not concerned with children sitting on it but do you think an adult (my 210 lb. husband) can sit on this to put shoes on, etc, and not have to worry about the bench? Going to IKEA this weekend to get started, thank you for the directions! AB

  39. Love it, just wish my husband was able to help with a project like that. Thanks for the ideas!

  40. This is simply fantastic. I have been scouring the web for something like this for weeks. As a matter of fact I went out and purchased the cabinets today and they are already assembled.
It's worth mentioning that these are "real" wood cabinets not the mdf crap that you typically get. As for "weight" I'm not sure why that would be a concern but I weigh 230 lbs and I stood on them with with no problem. This is because of the real wood and the fact that the construction utilizes screws and dowels. Also worth noting is that since they are made of wood it will be very easy to paint them to your desired color.
Again many thanks for posting this in such detail..

  41. @Mike...so glad you are trying this. Lattice is a friend in this project, use it in between the benches and below before you add the molding trim below. Please contact me if you have any questions! And good luck!

  54. I love D.I.Y. projects and I happened to find this amazing project of yours through Pinterest. I have a bottom of an antique armoire with deep drawers, high base board, gorgeous handles, and love it. I took it home and made it into a bench with only a upholstered seat temporarly "too long" I knew in my head exactly what I wanted to build it into myself. Seeing your amazing work on your project has now inspired me to kick it into gear and get er done! Its nice to have the visual of how you made it come together. Thank-you so much for sharing.

    sincerely, Bobby-Jo

  58. Looks great, one question the height? With the added pine top it is then the bench is about 24 inches high...is it to high if you did it again?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We don't think it's too high at all and would everything the same. I would say the bench stained boards added about a half an inch.

  72. You are AMAZING!

And you are saving me $3k+ on the custom build from the cabinet maker's quote. I cannot wait to see the look on the GC's face when I complete this & tell him I spent less than a quarter of what we were initially quoted (& this one is going to be prettier).

    Thank you!

  73. You have inspired me! As soon as I saw this I knew I would be making one! I wanted shoe storage though, so when I went to Ikea I was on the humt for slighty different cabinets. I found them. Thank you so much for sharing! Is there a way for me to show you a picture of mine?

  74. Great work! You really inspired me. For the shelves dividers at the top, did you use 1x8s or 1x12s?

  76. That is so gorgeous. Makes me wanna try it myself (but I know better. Haha). Maybe in the summer I will try it. Thanks for sharing.

  78. A while ago I see, but this looks great! Will definitely consider that when we are doing our entryway area up later this year (supposedly, hehe)...

  81. Love this project, are trying to replicate it exactly in our own home :) Could you tell me what type of boards you used for the lattice and shelf parts of the project? are they maple? someone is trying to get us to use melamine instead. Any thoughts? thanks!
